Hello 2017 and recent happenings…

2017 arrived pretty quick and I can say it hasn’t stopped! Back into the swing of things with work, half marathon training and life in general!

I’m currently sat in my favorite restaurant, with my cousin, with full bellies and flowing cups of tea/coffee. She’s working on her portfolio for a new job and I’m about to post this ‘recent happenings’, inspired as always, by Heidi.

DOING – typing away, coffee in one had, and my cousin next to me. Nestled in the warm restaurant on the sofa – perfect!

HEARING – the cooing noises from 4 babies behind us, with the chatter of their mums and the coffee machine buzzing away

DRINKING – soya cappuccino and water! The only two drinks you’ll find me with, oh and green tea!

EATING AND COOKING – recently I’ve been inspired by Alexandra, and a few other awesome ladies from Instagram, by making ‘abundance’ or ‘veggie’ bowls. My go to at the moment is quinoa topped with avocado (of course!), tuna or chicken, spinach, roasted veggies, beetroot and drizzled with tahini! Total win! With the cold weather we are having at the moment, hot drinks usually accompany these bowls! I’ve also been baking a lot. This coconut flour pumpkin bread, by Ashley, has been my go to, along with energy balls and constant batches of granola which I love to snack on and have as pudding with yogurt and frozen fruit. Overnight oats have taken a backseat and warm bowls of porridge are enjoyed all the time at the moment, not just for breakfast! Half marathon training has played with my appetite and I quite often crave a warming bowl before training.

WANTING – My holiday…5 weeks and 2 days to be precise! My family and I are off to St. Lucia to celebrate my parents 30th wedding anniversary.

PLAYING – Take That or Michael Buble…The only guys in my life! Ha! I absolutely love their music and find it super relaxing/a change to the repetitive radio songs at the moment. My mum and I have also been playing lots of board games in the evenings, nestled by the fire. Scrabble and Cluedo are our favs!

DECIDING – What to bake and cook next…! I’ve got a few recipes saved which I want to try, so I’ll be sure to use the rest of today/weekend to try them out.

ENJOYING – Cozy evenings by the fire. This is what I love about the Winter, and probably the only thing!

WATCHING – Silent Witness is back, making Monday nights enjoyable again! It’s my favorite show, I love a spooky/crime drama! I’ve abandoned Netflix recently, as just can’t seem to find anything on there. Tempted to cancel my subscription, but I know there are a few shows due to arrive on it soon. Might hold up on that one for now!

READING – Currently into The Girl in Cabin 10 that I was given by my parents for Christmas, along with The Poison Artist, which is next in line. Both sci-fi/thriller based and rather scary at times. I’ve been warned The Poison Artist is extremely dark, which makes me even more excited to get into it!!!

LOOKING – out the window at the rain drizzling down…a grey day today, the total opposite of yesterday which was blue sky and warm, winter sunshine.

LOVING – life. Its the death of recent famous people and family members that make you realize how short and precious life is. So enjoy it. Do something that scares you, enjoy your favorite glass of wine or bar of chocolate. Book that holiday you want to go on or buy that pair of shoes you have fallen in love with. At the end of the day, you can’t take it with you, so you may as well enjoy it now!

BUYING – Not a lot…I’m saving for St. Lucia in February and my trip to America in June. I can’t wait to enjoy another couple of weeks in the sun with best friends and lots of laughter!

PLANNING – My year…I’ve got 2 holidays booked and have just booked time off for when my good friends visit in May. I can tell 2017 is going to be a good one.

WEARING – My favorite dress from Gap, thermal tights (I told you I hate the winter), boots and THIS amazing scarf I was given by my friend for Christmas. Its like a rug, I kid you not, and I hate taking it off!

CRAVING – Warm bowls of oats and chocolate chip cookies…I have a few recipes that I think I need to bake!

SAVORING – My current set up right now.

FEELING – Content…Something I haven’t felt in a while. Life is pretty good right now and I am extremely lucky and thankful to have the people I have in my life. I may not see them all but this quote, that I saw once in a shop, reminds me that “friends are like stars…you don’t have to see them to know they are there.”

Have a lovely weekend everyone <3

Cheers to 2016

I can’t believe, as I sit here nestled on the sofa with the Christmas tree shining brightly next to me, that we say goodbye to another year. I wouldn’t say its been my best, but its definitely topped recent bad ones! It’s been a year of laughter, tears, aches, pains, gains and losses, but I’ve made so many memories that will last a lifetime.

Here are a few of my favorite memories from 2016…

  • I started the year off on a high with a new job. I was happy and content again, something I haven’t been for a while. I made new friends, who to this day, have continued to be there for me and support me. Something I am eternally grateful for.

  • Flying half way around the world to Australia, to surprise my youngest cousin on her 21st birthday. Never in a million years did I think I would jetting off there for a week, yes, mad I know, but SO worth it!

  • Running the Great Ormond Street 5k around the Olympic Park with my little cousin and family!

  • A brilliant 9 days back in New Jersey staying with and seeing all my old friends! It’s safe to say I didn’t want this trip to end!
I also ran my first 10k, with the support of my mum and Oscar and little did I know I would be running a half marathon a few months later!

  • In August, one of my best friends, from college, got married. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and the wedding was absolutely stunning! A very special weekend spent with very special friends!
  • Before I knew it, October was here and so was my very first half marathon…I’d spent the past 3 months training hard for it. This was the biggest achievement of my life and I am extremely proud of myself for completing it! I definitely have the bug now, because I’m running the Reading Half in March!
  • Saving the best for last…a new arrival. Another one of my best friends, baby girl. I remember the day, so clearly, that she told us she was pregnant and sent over the scan photo. She is absolutely gorgeous and my heart melts every time I see her <3

This year wouldn’t be possible without two very important and special people in my life – my parents. Without them I wouldn’t be the person I am or where I am in my life without their continual support, love and guidance. They’ve supported me through every decision, been there to cheer me on at many of my races and always show me so much love.

So there you have it, a round up of 2016. A fun year with many highs and lows, but I wouldn’t have changed the experiences I’ve had for anything. I love each and every person who has stepped into my life and wish you all a very Happy New Year!
Here’s to 2017, I can’t wait to see what’s in store!

All my love,

Emma xx

Long weekend in Switzerland

Last weekend I visited family friends, in Switzerland, with my mum and brother. A few weeks ago, they visited us and mentioned that we should come over to visit the Christmas markets and see their new apartment/where they live now. A few days later our trip was booked – I love a bit of spontaneity!

Leaving early Saturday morning and arriving back Monday early afternoon, this was a perfect amount of time to explore Zurich and neighboring towns/villages filled with Christmas markets and snow covered mountains.
Our flight arrived Saturday morning into Zurich, where we caught a train into the main station/centre of the city. There, we found our first market, which we wondered around, whilst we waited for our friend to meet us.

Once we met our friend, we made our way into Zurich city, where we caught the tram to a small, lakeside market and grabbed coffee/made a plan for the rest of the weekend. This market was beautiful, however, it was very small and not many of the stalls were open. The coffee was good though 😉

Once we finished coffee, we wondered the streets of Zurich, passing many beautiful churches and art work on many of the buildings. After some lunch, we headed out of Zurich and up to a small town nestled in the mountains, called Einsiedein. This beautiful town is known for the stunning monastery that sits on top of the hill, where inside lies, a Black Madonna, dating back to the 15th Century. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to take any photos inside, but believe me when I say, it was a pretty spectacular sight!

Before we knew it, the sun was setting and the temperature dropped significantly, where we retreated back to the warmth of our friends apartment and indulged in the goodies we’d picked up throughout the day.

Our final day was spent up another mountain, luckily, in the bright sunshine. We caught a train to the last station, then jumped on a mechanical tram to climb the rest. Through the thick cloud and snow covered rocks, we finally reached the top, where it was bright blue sky and beautiful, warm sunshine! A spectacular sight and the views were just incredible. Although you couldn’t see down below, because of the cloud cover, what you could see, was stunning. We then made our way down the other side of the mountain, grabbed lunch by the river and then headed home before dark.

A really great weekend away, even though it went so quick, it was so much fun! A lovely break to get into the Christmas spirit and catch up with friends!

Life Recently

A roaring fire with a very content white dog flat out in front of it, catch up tv on and everyone happy and settled in their favorite chair…a typical Sunday evening in my house. Recently, life has been extremely busy, both at work and life outside. Hence the reason I’ve been so quiet…Quite a bit has happened, there’s a lot of change on the horizon and with Christmas right around the corner, it doesn’t look like its going to slow down!

I handed my notice in at one of my nanny jobs last week, which was a very hard decision. I’ve been with them for over 2 years, since the youngest was 6 weeks old. They have grown up and started nursery/school, so I feel like now is the right time to go. My last day will be a hard one, but I will stay in contact with them for sure. Lots of babysitting to be done, I have a feeling!
I also signed up for my next half marathon in Reading. My training has gently started again, which I’m enjoying. Although its been hard to get out in the wet/cold, I’ve felt better after for doing it!
Finally, Christmas shopping has been completed, now it just needs to wrapped! I plan to stick a good Christmas film on and do it one evening maybe this week or next.

However manic and crazy it has been, I’ve managed to enjoy a fun filled weekend in London visiting a friend, attending an epic spin class and wondering the Christmas light/shopper filled streets! Today was my dad’s birthday, a day full of celebrations and family, which was really lovely. My last quiet weekend until the New Year now – how crazy is that?!! – but its been a brilliant one for sure!
Next weekend I’m off to visit family friends in Switzerland with my mum and brother. I’ll definitely be writing a blog about our travels, so be prepared for Christmas market overload!!! I’m so excited!

Hope you’ve had a wonderful weekend and are well rested for another week ahead!

Happenings 30.10.16

I have pinched this idea from Heidi, a nutritionist, foodie, blogger and super sweet person I follow on Instagram. I have just finished catching up with her blog and thought I would give this ago, since its been a while since I did any blogging, and I’m feeling the need to write one!!

DOING – Sitting in my favorite cafe with a smooth cappuccino on one side and a quiet, for once, phone on the other. Soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying escaping the house for a bit, after being bound with a rotten cold virus.

HEARING – The coffee machine humming away, chat and soft music playing in the background.

DRINKING – Soya cappuccino and water!

EATING + COOKING – Lots of immune boosting foods, even though my appetite has been non existent over the past week. I’ve been eating a lot of chicken, soup, turmeric, ginger, fresh fruit, plain food and other remedies to help my body fight off this cold. Lizzie, another foodie I follow on Instagram, has a website full of great recipes and advice. She wrote a great blog on fighting/keeping winter bugs at bay. Here it is, if you want to check it out – 10 steps to beat the winter bugs.
I’ve also really been into quinoa, butternut squash and roasted aubergine bowls drizzled with tahini and chopped avocado! Easy to prep and have in the fridge when your appetite suddenly comes back with a vengeance!

WANTING – To feel better! I’m slowly getting there, just had enough of nose blowing and coughing!

PLAYING – I haven’t been doing a lot of this for myself…! Mostly with the little girl I look after. We had a very quiet week playing at home, seeing another nanny friend and her little one, as well as dog walking with my mum and coloring – a definite favorite past time! Easy half term week, which was much needed.

DECIDING – What to have for lunch…! It’ll definitely involve avocado though! I often get stuck in a rut of having the same thing everyday, so I need to find some new inspiration! Any recommendations welcome 🙂

ENJOYING – Time to myself and some much needed days in bed/time of work to rest.

LOOKING – For some new pajama bottoms….!! Joules currently have 25% off, so I’ll probably purchase some from there. Always a bonus having a discount!

LOVING – Life in general right now…I’m really enjoying my job and I have a wonderful network of friends and family who support and love me.

BUYING – Christmas presents…ha! Yes, its the end of October, but I have learnt from one of my bosses that starting early saves on the rush and is gentle on the bank account. I’m stuck for a few ideas for people, but otherwise am pretty much nearly done!

PLANNING – My next half marathon…totally mad, yes, but I absolutely LOVED training and running Henley. I’ve got a few I am currently deciding on, as well as a half tough mudder, which I’ve signed up for with the group of ladies I do bootcamp with!

WATCHING – Netflix! I have just finished a sci-fi series called “Stranger Things” a MUST if you love that kind of thrill! I’ve also been finishing “Fuller House” as season 2 is due soon, as well as recapping on the last series of “Gilmore Girls”, because season 2 is also due out, at the end of November – woohoo! I’ve had a lot of recommendations from Heidi and other people, so I’ve got a list to work on now.

SAVORING – The last few days/weeks of fall and the beautiful sight of leaves on the trees. This time of year, and Spring, are my favorite. I’m enjoying not wearing/bundling up in so many layers and the mild weather we seem to be having. Holding on to every last minute of it!

WEARING – My favorite tunic and cardigan with brown boots. Comfy!

READING – Just started ‘The Ex’…a book that grabbed my attention from reading the bio, and admittedly judging the front of the cover…something I really try not to do! However, so far so good!

CRAVING – Smoked salmon, poached eggs and avocado! Currently what is on the menu at the cafe I’m perched in…deciding whether or not to grab it here or to go home for lunch…*EDIT* – I went for it and it was super delicious! Happy 🙂

FEELING – Happy and content, albeit full of cold still…! Very much looking forward to feeling myself again and having my appetite back. Plus getting back to my normal routine of working out.

I really enjoyed writing this blog, it was different and fun. Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed it too!
